This study describes the results of 23 Ah Ni/Zn cells with zinc electrodes containing and nonsintered nickel oxide electrodes. Calcium hydroxide containing zinc electrodes tested in show less shape change and zinc dendrites, are less soluble in , and have a higher capacity retention and cycle life than comparable zinc electrodes in cells with higher concentrations. This improvement in performance is attributed to the formation of calcium zincate in the electrode structure. Formation of calcium zincate is shown to be concentration dependent.
