Hyperparathyroidism associated with prolonged intake of thiazides for essential hypertension has been found in six patients. Although these patients exhibited hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and pathological changes in their parathyroid glands, they did not have the common complications of hyperparathyroidism, such as renal lithiasis, bone resorption, and peptic ulcers. Correction of the disease produced marked subjective improvement in the majority of the patients but failed to influence their hypertension. It is important to determine serum calcium and phosphorus levels in hypertensive patients prior to and during the administration of thiazides.
