SUMMARY The widespread lateral persistence of individual beds (posts) of the Great Limestone (Namurian, E 1 ) of Weardale, long suggested by quarry workers, has been confirmed. Variations in thickness and fauna of the posts have been recorded throughout Weardale. Several areas where the Great Limestone is abnormally thin have been noted.
