Abstract

Another problem is that simplifying assumptions, which are a help to the reader first learning about a subject, may sometimes be seriously misleading. For instance, in shock-tube work the ideal gas equation of state is almost always a satisfactorily precise representation of real gas behavior; however, the assumption of constant heat capacity can lead to large errors. This is particularly true when one derives expressions for the limiting behavior for strong shocks.
