The barium enema is the procedure of choice in diagnosing diseases of the colon, and it is the most effective overall method of detecting colonic cancer. An examination technique is described, and some of the pitfalls and problems in diagnosis are emphasized. It is suggested that the degree of accuracy and reliability inherent in this examination is often not achieved in clinical practice.
