The reduced matrix elements of the dynamical dipolar polarizability ε(k,k′) of the iodine atom are derived from the dispersion energy matrix for I2. The preponderance of the ε(0,0) term, proportional to the mean value C6 of the corresponding coefficients of all the different molecular states of I2, is strongly related to the quasi-isotropic feature of the C6 coefficient. Our value for the static dipole polarizability α is coherent with other determinations.
