PRIMARY hyperparathyroidism usually has an insidious onset, presenting when genito-urinary complications have developed, with stones, nephrocalcinosis, impairment of renal function, polyuria and polydipsia; with skeleto-muscular involvement manifested as bone pains, tumours, pathological fractures or loss of energy and generalized weakness; with gastro-intestinal symp- toms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia or constipation. Rarely, however, acute symptoms may develop de novo or be superimposed on the hitherto more chronic disease.
