Convenient Preparation of Methylthiomethyl <i>p</i>-Tolyl Sulfone Starting from Dimethyl Sulfoxide

Abstract

Abstract An efficient method for preparing methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulfone was accomplished by the Pummerer reaction of dimethyl sulfoxide with acetic anhydride followed by treatment of the resulting acetoxymethyl methyl sulfide with sodium p-toluenesulfinate in the presence of sodium acetate in acetic acid.
