1. With ever-increasing cost containment, patients are being discharged from the hospital earlier. 2. The majority (96%) of elderly patients (average age 70 years) in this study, after abdominal and cardiac surgery, thought they were ready to be discharged. 3. Surgical patients' level of functional ability was significantly improved from predischarge to postdischarge. There were no significant differences in their pain, strength, knowledge, and mood levels. 4. Predominantly non-nursing functions (eg, transportation, housekeeping) were identified as areas of needed help at home for elderly patients after surgery.
