Abstract

ABSTRACT BACTERIA are associated with ochre formation and clogging of small openings. Under controlled conditions, ochre formed within a few hours and adhered to glass, polyethylene (PE), polyvinylchloride (PVC), neoprene, stainless steel, and soil organic matter. Chemically precipitated Fe(III) free of bacteria did not stick under water and the precipitate was porous. Citric acid is an excellent extracting agent for Fe(II) in discolored groundwater samples. The method has merit for estimating the potential for ochre formation in drainage sites.
