Abstract

Coxsackie virus B3 (CVB3) infection of Balb/c and DBA/2 mice produces acute myocarditis with different pathogenic mechanisms. Cardiac injury in Balb/c mice results exclusively from cellular immunity to heart antigens while damage in DBA/2 animals is mediated by IgG heart reactive antibodies (HRA). ImmunoSuppressive therapy with cyclosporin A (CsA) cannot prevent myocarditis in Balb/c mice but CsA eliminates cardiac inflammation in DBA/2 animals, suggesting that benefit from this therapy clinically might depend upon the pathogenic mechanisms involved.
