An ideal model for the study of semiconductor/metal transitions is found in the new solid Ag 25 Bi 3 O 18 , which is characterized by a unique structural property: A Bi atom in an unambiguous + III valence state (as against + V) at ambient pressure is possibly converted reversibly into B V under pressure through delocalization of the lone pair. The study of this compound should also be relevant for the understanding of superconductivity in compounds with a bismuth oxide basis.
