Abstract

Abstract A new series of binuclear copper(II) complexes with different bridging groups, Fsal(=gly)2Cu2X (X=OH, Cl, Br) and Fsal(=ala)2Cu2X (X=Cl), were synthesized, Fsal(=gly)2 and Fsal(=ala)2 being the Schiff bases prepared by condensation of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol with glycine and alanine, respectively. The copper(II) ions are bridged by the phenolic oxygen in the organic moiety and also the X. The properties of the complexes were studied by IR spectra, visible spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurements at various temperatures. From the cryomagnetic data it was concluded that the effect of the bridging group X upon magnetic exchange interaction decreases in the order: OH>Cl∼Br.
