Abstract

Beech and pine were pyrolysed at different temperatures in natural state and after Si02- sol infiltration. Correlation of weight change, porosity and density on pre-treatment were determined and optimised to obtain carbon templates with high porosity. The SiO2-infiltration was examined with the aim of a perfect fill-up of cell walls. The infiltration process was not influenced by the type of sol but showed a strong dependence from pyrolysis pre-treatment. The templates were transformed by a carbothermal reaction into SiC by preserving the high anisotropic porosity.
