Ithas long beendoubted whether or notitis possible fora transposed aortato arisefroma morphologically left ventricle, andfora transposed pulmonary arterytooriginate froma morphologically right ventricle, thishaving beendesignated anatomically corrected transposition by Harrisand Farber in1939.Suchcaseshavebeenregarded as errorsinobservation (Lochte, 1898), asinexplicable variations ofnature(Geipel, 1903), asembryologicallyimpossible and hencenon-existent (Van MieropandWiglesworth, 1963), and as very probably non-existent (VanPraagh etal., 1964b). Hence, theprincipal purposesofthis paper are (1)toprovide convincing evidence thatanatomically corrected transpositions doindeedexist, and(2) toconsider some ofthedevelopmental anddiagnostic implications ofthis fact.
