Abstract The absolute thermoelectric power, S, of the liquid system Ag-Au has been measured as a function of composition. S for both liquid Ag and liquid Au is found to be slightly more positive than for the solid. However, S changes markedly on alloying, going negative for Ag concentrations of 30–75 at. %. It is shown that the Ziman theory of electron transport yields, for this particular system, a relationship between the thermoelectric power of the alloy and that of the pure components. The theory correctly predicts the composition dependence of S.
