In the near future, detailed knowledge should be acquired of the transforming src gene of avian sarcoma viruses (ASV) and the protein it encodes. It is therefore now pertinent to examine how expression of this gene is controlled and modified by both cellular and viral factors. In permissive avian cells, such studies are hampered by the spread of virus among the cell population and the difficulty of subjecting infected cells to a clonal analysis. However, a fruitful start in resolving this problem has been made in several laboratories by examining the sequelae to infection of nonpermissive mammalian cells by ASV.
