Side effects such as hypotension, worsening or precipitation of congestive heart failure, or asthma are well known.In-vitro experiments by workers such as Werman and Wislicki (1) and Wislicki and Rosenblum (2) have shown that β-blockers are capable of a depressant effect on the neuromuscular junction. We saw three patients in whom it seemed to us that this phenomenon played an important role.Patient 1 was a woman aged 67 years who, because of hypertension, was receiving oxprenolol (Trasicor⌖), 30 mg/day. For 3 months before her appearance in our...References1. WERMANWISLICKI RL: Propranolol, a curariform and cholinomimetic agent at the frog neuromuscular junction.
