Abstract

Even a very old drug holds some surprises when its polymorphism is investigated in detail. The commercially available form of triamcinolone acetonide (modification I) is a hydrate that contains a small amount of water, which is responsible for its stability. The removal of water results in a transformation into the previously unknown modification II. This finding may have a large impact on the production of the dosage form.
