Abstract —A quantitative assay for the rat brain microsomal stearyl CoA desaturase is described. The method was used to determine the developmental pattern and regional distribution of the desaturase in rat brain. Even though the specific activity of the enzyme decreased to one‐third from 8 to 60 days of age, the total activity per brain remained the same. The regional distribution of the activity in adult brain was of the order midbrain > medulla oblongata > cerebral hemispheres > cerebellum, with midbrain activity being about twice as that of the cerebellum.
