ABSTRACT This paper presents a method and a computer analysis of moderate structural deflections on shakedown loads of beams and plane frames. Effects such as changes in the incremental collapse mechanism, transition from stability to instability (or vice versa), and the importance of proper selection of the bending moment-axial force interaction curve are illustrated in numerical examples. The most important practical conclusion follows from the fact that the appearance of compressive axial forces may considerably diminish the shakedown load domain.
