Abstract The acceptor properties of various modified poly silica acids as aerosil or suprasil have been investigated by means of complexation with Fe(phen)2(CN)2 in suspension of 1,2‐dichloroethane. U V‐measurements and the acceptor number (AN) of Gutmann fits a linear relation. The influence of water on the surface acceptor strength in comparison to the behaviour in volume is discussed. Chlorination by SOCl 2 drastically elevates the acceptor strength. Ester formation or reaction with poly epoxides lowers the AN of the surface.
