The soliton states suggested by Davydov as approximate solutions to the Schr\"odinger equation for one-dimensional systems are examined from the standpoint of the variational principle. We show that the correct equations of motion are, in general, different from those proposed by Davydov. In addition, we comment on the time evolution of these states.
