Abstract

New orientations observed in recrystallized microstructure of metals and alloys with intermediate and low stacking fault energies are sometimes explained as the result of multiple twinning. The twin chains can be found in many cases only by crystallographic construction, i.e. in an indirect manner. The objection can then be made that any new orientation can be explained on principle by multiple twinning if twinning occurs sufficiently frequently. Therefore, the prerequisites for an unequivocal explanation of an observed orientation are investigated. Especially the conditions for a random orientation are considered. In view of the results the possibility to obtain an unequivocal orientation as the result of multiple twinning and the conclusions for the understanding of recrystallization texture are discussed.
