Abstract The African region is greatly behind other regions in utilizing information and communication technologies. Complex socio‐economic problems are major obstacles to the diffusion of networking technology in the region. Little awareness on the value of networking for fighting underdevelopment is the major bottleneck for implementation of information and communication technology projects. This paper discusses opportunities, problems and strategic actions for utilizing information and communication technologies to solve priority problems and to realize sustainable development in the region.
