The problem of reconstructing the medium characteristics from electromagnetic reflection data under excitation by plane waves is considered. The authors discuss exact methods based on analytical solution of the one-dimensional inverse scattering problem for a horizontally layered medium highlighting the simultaneous inversion of more than one parameter. Inversion methods for the one-dimensional magnetotelluric problems are also examined, including reconstructing the piece-wise continuous parameters.
