Polycrystalline Al-Mg-3% specimens were deformed by biaxial compression or tensile expansion Preferred orientations were determined in shear bands and in the abutting matrix by Automated Crystal Orientation Measurement (ACOM) from backscatter Kikuchi patterns in the SEM. From x-ray pole figure and individual grain orientation data, respectively, the ODF of global texture as well as local texture of shear hands and the neighboring matrix have been calculated with the series expansion method for triclinic sample symmetry. The conclusion, by comparing local with global textures, is drawn that shear band texture is very similar to the usual deformation texture of aluminum provided that the reference system is rotated about the transverse direction by the angle of shear band incliniation.
