The Treatment of Dry Eyes with Na Hyaluronate (Healon??)

Abstract

Sodium hyaluronate is a viscoelastic substance used for vitreous replacement and as a protective device for the corneal endothelium. Its structure resembles that of a sponge of mucopolysaccharide chains with water trapped between its molecules. A 0.1% dilution of this preparation was used as tear replacement in 20 patients with severe keratitis sicca. Pain and photophobia improved rapidly in all cases following the application of Na hyaluronate. Relief of symptoms and improvement in vision has been maintained in most patients for a period of over 1 year.
