An intensive study of the behavior of the proton beam in the Cosmotron has been made for the period just after injection, before the application of any accelerating field. The actual orbits have been traced for small variations in energy and time of injection in order to obtain optimum injection conditions. These orbits have been used to make further refinements on the adjustments of some of the injection components. The time required for the unaccelerated beam to spiral to the inside wall of the vacuum chamber is used as a basis for the normal injection routine.
