Abstract Oxyfluoride compounds form a new family of ferroelectrics. Considerations of chemical bonding lead to an explanation of the influence of oxygen replacement by fluorine on the Curie temperature and spontaneous polarisation. Ferroelectric oxyfluoro - compounds known at present are listed in a table with their structural types and Curie temperatures.
