Abstract An expression for the elastic energy per unit length of a straight dislocation in a medium of arbitrary anisotropy is derived in a form which is simply suited for numerical calculations. The expression utilizes laboratory coordinates throughout and, unlike previous analyses, its evaluation does not rely upon solving the roots of a sextic algebraic equation. Numerical results are presented for glide dislocations in three cubic metals of low, intermediate and large anisotropy — niobium: copper, and lithium.
