Abstract Following an examination of the design constraints for the formulation of good organic conductors and a brief review of the synthesis of heterocyclic selenium π-donors such as TMTSF and the zero pressure organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4, the preparation and characterization of five new π-donors is outlined. These new π-donors are dithiophenotetrathiafulvalene, (DTTTF), dithiophenotetraselenafulvalene (DTTSF), dibenzotetraselenafulvalene (DBTSF), dibenzotetratellurafulvalene (DBTTeF), and benzotrisselenophene (BTS).
