THIS paper represents an attempt to demonstrate an important feature about the behavior of melanomas in human beings — namely, that the chances of five-year survival are distinctly greater in females than in males. Circumstantial evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that melanoma is a hormone-dependent tumor.The word melanoma is used here to denote the malignant tumor derived from the melanoblast (or melanogenoblast) that is capable of spread and metastasis and has elsewhere been known as malignant melanoma, melanocarcinoma or melanosarcoma.The present investigation was undertaken almost by chance.
