The magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer spectra of the compounds: CuFeCl4, AgFeCl4, and TlFeCl4 have been measured. These data can be interpreted for the Ag and Tl compounds as Ag(I) and Tl(I) with Fe(III). In contrast, CuFeCl4 must be interpreted as Cu(II) and Fe(II). The magnetic susceptibility of AgFeCl4, TlFeCl4, and CuFeCl4 follows a Curie–Weiss law to low temperatures with Curie–Weiss constants of 53, 31, and − 14.1°K, respectively. All three become antiferromagnetic with Néel temperatures of 13.1 ± 0.2, 11.2 ± 0.2, and 20.5 ± 0.3°K, respectively. The isomer shifts relative to a copper matrix source of AgFeCl4, TlFeCl4, and CuFeCl4 were found to be + 0.11, + 0.11, and + 0.92 mm/sec, respectively, whereas the quadrupole splittings were found to be 0.16, 0.00, and 0.60 mm/sec, in the same order. The Fe(II) seems to be in a significantly lower symmetry environment than the Fe(III), probably due to the different geometrical demands of Cu(II) compared to Ag(I) and Tl(I).
