Abstract The 3-spiro-3ʹ,3ʹ-dimethyl-2ʹ-oxiranes of 5-benzylidene-2,4-dioxo-pyrrolidone, 5-benzyl-idene-2,4-dioxotetrahydrofuranone and 5-benzylidene-2,4-dioxotetrahydrothiophene yield the corresponding heterocyclic reductones (3 a-c) upon treatment with sulfuric acid. The tetramic acid reducton 3a can also be obtained by hydrolysis of the diazoniumsalt 5.
