The culture conditions and method of isolation of brevianamide A (1) from Penicillium brevicompactum have been improved. Use of 3H and 14C labelling has shown that cyclo-L-tryptophyl-L-proline (5) is incorporated efficiently into brevianamide A (1) and a biosynthetic sequence is proposed.
