Abstract

Synopsis Studies of lavas and vents of Lower Carboniferous age in the Campsie and Kilpatrick Hills of the western Midland Valley of Scotland show that the earlier flows tend to be microporphyritic and were erupted largely from vents lying along a pronounced NE.–SW. trend. Later flows include a much larger proportion of feldspar-phyric basalts many of which may have been erupted from fissures now seen as dykes. A varied sequence of lavas in the Campsie Fells indicates the formation of differentiated magma possibly in association with the major central volcano Meikle Bin.
