Abstract

Abstract Photo-electric studies have been made of the light emitted from flash-initiated explosions of acetylene and oxygen photo-sensitized by nitrogen dioxide in a long quartz tube. These confirmed the presence of a very short-lived intense emission from the diatomic radicals which had previously been found by Norrish, Porter & Thrush (1953a). It is shown that, whilst the main part of the explosion is homogeneous, two detonation waves travel a short distance to the ends of the reaction vessel. The sharp peak is caused by the impact of one of these detonation waves on the vessel window nearer the spectrograph.
