Two patients with synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint are described. Awareness of this rare lesion is important to prevent overdiagnosis and radical treatment. The histologic changes are similar enough to those of malignant cartilaginous tumors so as to cause diagnostic confusion. Treatment consists of synovectomy and removal of loose bodies within the joint space.
