Pre-irradiation, topical application of dimethyl sulfoxide to the tails of male CFW mice (50–60 days old) provided considerable radioprotection. The longer the immersion time in DMSO (up to 10 min) the better the protection. The DMSO pre-treated irradiated survivors had less initial weight loss than the water-treated control animals. Treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide after irradiation had no effect on mortality.
