Three patients, one child and two adults, showed clinical and laboratory evidence of acute glomerulonephritis in association with varicella. All three had mild to moderate proteinuria and microscopic or gross hematuria prior to or with the onset of rash. In one of the patients, renal biopsy established the diagnosis of acute glomerulonephritis. The histopathologic picture seen was identical to that described for poststreptococcal disease. Renal function studies done indicate that renal disease associated with varicella may severely compromise the function of the kidney.
