Measurements of the fusion cross sections for $^{10,11}\mathrm{B}$+$^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{13}\mathrm{C}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{14}\mathrm{N}$, $^{14}\mathrm{N}$+$^{14}\mathrm{N}$, and $^{14}\mathrm{N}$+$^{16}\mathrm{O}$ at sub-Coulomb-barrier energies, together with earlier results for $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$+$^{16}\mathrm{O}$, and $^{16}\mathrm{O}$+$^{16}\mathrm{O}$, show that the average energy dependence of the fusion cross section can change dramatically with only small variations in the mass and charge of the interacting nuclei.
