Problems with the New Inflationary Universe

Abstract

It is demonstrated that in the new-inflationary-universe scenario based on a Coleman-Weinberg-type potential all the bubbles evolve through the SU(4) \ensuremath{\bigotimes} U(1) local minimum. The transition from this local minimum to the SU(3) \ensuremath{\bigotimes} SU(2) \ensuremath{\bigotimes} U(1) global minimum is first order, and so the scenario does not solve all of the cosmological problems.
