SCLEROSING cholangitis is a rare clinical entity. We found only 20 unequivocal cases reported in the past forty years.1 2 3 A number of other reported cases do not meet the criteria for this entity. These criteria are as follows: progressive icterus, with confirmatory evidence of obstruction, and exclusion of localized strictures from previous operations; typical surgical findings of diffuse sclerosis of the common duct, with pathological evidence of a chronic inflammatory fibrous process but without evidence of a malignant neoplasm; and a follow-up period long enough to exclude sclerosing carcinoma of the bile ducts.The rarity of this syndrome and the . . .
