Abstract Treatment of N-tosylphenylacetamide derivatives with copper(II) acetate in the presence of a catalytic amount of palladium(II) acetate affords 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles. The reaction proceeds through the intramolecular metallation of an aromatic C–H bond and the following C–N bond formation by reductive elimination.
