Abstract

on Aoba Island in the northern New Hebrides I gathered what historical information I could concerning the preceding century and a half of contact with European traders, missionaries and administrative officials. In this paper I present the results of my findings, largely based on the oral tradi tions2 of the islanders themselves, in the hope that they may prove to be of some value to students of Pacific history.
