The purpose of this study was the development, testing, and analysis of a nursing home aide screening device. Subsequent to development, the instrument was administered to a sample of presently employed aides who were rated by supervisors as successful or unsuccessful. Forty items of the instrument were found to significantly differentiate between the two groups of aides. Further testing with larger samples will be necessary to develop a screening device that will select potentially successful aides and, therefore, help to improve the total care of residents.
