The (n,n′γ) reaction has been studied for the nuclides 11 B, 14 N, 19 F, 23 Na, 27 Al, 28 Si, and 40 Ca through the use of fission-spectrum neutrons. The gamma-ray spectra obtained using a Ge(Li)–NaI(Tl) split-annulus spectrometer revealed that levels up to 9 MeV are populated. Analysis of the gamma-ray spectra permitted the derivation of decay schemes and, from the branching, the primary population of each level observed. Assuming an exponential form for the reactor fission-spectrum neutrons, a model based upon the Hauser–Feshbach formalism was employed to calculate the relative population expected for each level using previously reported J π values. The validity of the model and the reliability of obtaining spin information is examined.
