An Intracellular Micro-Organism Associated With Tissues of Heterodera Spp

Abstract

The ultrastructure of a bacterium-like organism found living intracellularly in tissues of two Heterodera spp., one a population of H. rostochiensis from Bolivia, S. America, and the other a population of H. goettingiana from Lincolnshire, England, is described. The organism was particularly abundant in the reproductive system but did not prevent the production of fertilised eggs. It closely resembles the so-called 'companion symbiont' found in leafhopper insects, both in general morphology and in having striated inclusion bodies.
