Bopp's approximation to the energy of an<i>N</i>-electron system

Abstract

A faulty discussion by Bopp in 1959 leading to an alleged lower bound for the energy of an N-electron system suggests a very simple approximate formula for the ground state energy. Calculations for the series of ions Be+, C2 +,... A8 + yield results with an accuracy to about 2%.
